BYD partners with two-wheeler maker TAILG to develop batteries for its EV models

BYD has partnered with Chinese electric two-wheeler maker TAILG Technology Group to use its battery technology beyond EV motorcycles, e-bikes, and scooters. BYD and TAILG will also focus on improving the safety of the batteries themselves, especially in their structure 

BYD partnered with TAILG, a Chinese two-wheeler giant, to develop batteries for its electric motorcycles, e-bikes, and scooters. TAILG Technology Group announced the partnership at a product launch yesterday, becoming the first major manufacturer in the electric two-wheeler space to partner with BYD. The two companies will work together to address the challenges faced by two-wheeler batteries and collaborate on the development of BYD batteries that can achieve the same lifespan as two-wheeler bodies, TAILG said. The two will utilize cloud-based big data to create a cloud-based safety system to improve the safety of electric two-wheelers, according to an announcement by TAILG. BYD and TAILG will also focus on improving the safety of the batteries themselves, especially in their structure, according to TAILG. 

Founded in 2003 TAILG is, like BYD, based in Shenzhen and one the largest two-wheeler manufacturers in China. It has a production capacity of 15 million units, selling in more than 90 countries and regions in 30,000 stores. The company recently opened overseas R&D centers in Vietnam and Indonesia. Their main products are electric motorcycles, bikes, tricycles, and scooters. BYD is the second-largest battery maker in China after CATL. 

China's electric two-wheeler ownership reached 350 million units, and their production was 42.28 million units in 2023, according to data released on April 7 by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Electric two-wheelers have brought convenience to Chinese residents' daily mobility, but fires have occurred from time to time. A total of 21,000 electric two-wheeler fires were reported in China in 2023, a 17.4 percent increase compared to 2022. In February, BYD announced it would produce safe and reliable LFP batteries for the two-wheeler market. “Our mission is to let people use batteries without worries” the Shenzhen-based company said then.

BYD Racco tops 5,000 orders in Japan in first week of pre-sales

The Chinese automaker’s new kei EV is showing early momentum in one of Japan’s most protected vehicle segments, with demand driven largely by existing mini-car owners and second-car buyers  BYD Racco has gained strong early traction following its launch. Since opening pre-orders on July 21, the model has secured more than 5,000 confirmed orders in its first week. BYD Japan aims to r each cumulative orders of 10,000 units by the end of 2026.
