Xpeng launches P7+ in China: 31,528 firm orders three hours after launch

On October 7, Xpeng launched the P7+, which is the first car to go on sale using the company’s new AI Hawk system. This abandons Lidar for urban smart driving and relies on a Tesla-like vision approach. The Xpeng P7+ starts at 186,800 yuan ($26,100) and had received 31,528 firm orders, breaking records for all other models in Xpeng's history 

Xpeng launched the P7+ at an event that began at 7:30 pm Beijing time on November 7, and announced pricing and opened up ordering at around 9:00 pm Beijing time. Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said the sedan received more than 10,000 firm orders in the first 12 minutes of its launch. As of 0:00 midnight Beijing time on November 7, the P7+ had received 31,528 firm orders, breaking records for all other models in Xpeng's history. For the first time, Xpeng is able to offer the same level of self-driving on all versions of a model. According to Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng, the P7+ combines the stance of a sedan, practicality of an SUV and a comfort of an MPV. The dimensions are 5056, 1937, and 1512 mm (l/w/h), while the wheelbase is 3000 mm. Weight, on the other hand, is 1967 kg or 2037 kg depending on the version. The car offers torsional rigidity of 40,500 Nm/degree, suitable for 2024 C-NCAP five star safety. According to Xpeng the P7+ is targeted at the 28-36 age group who are social elites passionate about technology. 

At launch, the P7+ is only available as a rear-wheel-drive car with a choice of two different electric motors. Lower-powered versions use a 180 kW electric motor produced by Xpeng’s Wuhan plant. The top speed for this version is 200 km/h, and the acceleration time is 6.8 seconds. More powerful versions use a 230 kW electric motor. This reduces the 0-100 time down to 5.9 seconds but does not increase the top speed. The Mona M03 was the first Xpeng to come with only lithium iron phosphate batteries, and the P7+ continues this trend. Using a 60.7 kWh battery, the car has a CLTC range of 602 km, whereas with the larger 76.3 kWh battery, the range goes up to 710 km. Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng said that in December 2024 the P7+ will get the OTA update that will boost its range numbers to 615 km and 725 km, respectively. 

Inside there is a 15.6-inch infotainment screen along with a 10.25-inch instrument panel. These are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SA8295P chip which boosts overall performance by 50% compared to an 8155 chip. The car supports UWB key and OTA updates. There is also a 9-inch streaming mirror and an 8-inch entertainment screen in the rear. The latter can control the rear seats, AC, and entertainment. The P7+ uses the AI Tianxian system, which integrates Xpeng’s self-developed X-GPT large model. It claims over 1,000 perception points. Xpeng says that its Xiao P AI assistant understands more deeply, thinks more fully, acts more accurately, and not only understands human language but also completes the task in one stage. 

Higher-spec models gain heating, ventilation, and massage functions on both the front and rear seats. The rear seats also have electric rake adjustment. There is also a 2.1-square-meter panoramic roof. Higher trim models gain perforated Nappa leather for the upholstery. There is also a 20-speaker self-developed sound system with 7.1.4 panoramic surround sound. Rear trunk space is up to 725 litres and with the seats down the P7+ can hold 2221 litres. That is enough to hold thirty-three 20-inch suitcases. Two Nvidia Orin X chips provide 508 TOPS of computing power for self-driving. These use data from eleven cameras, three millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Xpeng claims the AI Hawk system can use this setup to provide the equivalent level of self-driving capability, XNGP, that previously only its Max models equipped with Lidar could provide.

There are three versions of the Xpeng P7+ priced from 186,800 to 218,800 yuan ($ 26,100 – 30,600). They are as follows:

Xpeng P7+ Limited Edition Max 218,800 yuan ($ 30,600)

 

The Xpeng P7+’s current top-trim level is actually a limited version called Limited Max with 20-inch rims, 76.3 kWh battery and a zero-to-hundred acceleration time of 5.9 seconds. Its quantity is only 500 units. For clarity, the Tesla Model 3 starts at 231,900 yuan ($ 32,400) in China.
