Volkswagen Golf R: 333 HP and 270 km/h for the new hot hatch
Volkswagen completes the range of the new Golf version with the R, the sportiest of all, powered by a 333 HP 2.0 turbo petrol engine: as on the previous R in the special 20 Years version, created in 2022 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the R (the first R was, in 2002, the R32 with the 241 HP 3.2 6-cylinder) and 13 HP more than the standard R of the previous Golf, for a total of 333 HP and 420 Nm of maximum torque. The engine is coupled to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive combined with torque splitter and torque vectoring. The maximum speed is now 270 km/h instead of 250 km/h thanks to the standard Performance package for Italy, which also offers two additional modes: Drift and Special. The Special mode has been specifically adapted to the conditions on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
On the new Golf R, the calibrations of the progressive steering, the DCC electronic suspension and the vehicle dynamics management software have also been updated and refined, while the XDS electronic differential control software is new. The new Golf R stands out from the current Golf models for its LED matrix front lights, the illuminated Volkswagen logo, the specific design of the air intakes on the bumpers and the 19" alloy wheels, which a larger spoiler on the roof is added with the standard R-Performance package.
The interiors offer a revisited design and a latest generation infotainment system. The 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital instrument panel comes with the Performance package, a GPS laptimer for automatic measurement of track splits via satellite signals and an accelerometer, which records acceleration performance for 0 -100, the 80-120 and the quarter mile. Specific to the Golf R is the inclusion of a horizontal rev counter with a luminous flash to suggest shifting.
The new 12.9” center console display integrates the virtual assistant Ida, enabling control of the climate system, phone connectivity, navigation, and the activation of specific features such as driving profiles. For the first time, the voice command system includes access to ChatGPT.
The new Golf R is also available in the exclusive Black Edition, featuring a sophisticated dark aesthetic with darker VW emblems and R logos, black R brake calipers with a dark R logo, 19-inch black Estoril wheels, and black exhaust outlets. The darkened IQ.LIGHT Matrix LED headlights further enhance the distinctive appearance of this special edition.
