NIO flagship ES9 SUV has reached 3,000 cumulative deliveries in Shanghai, the city where the company's global headquarters are located. NIO was founded in Shanghai in 2014. In 2018, its Founder's Edition ES8 began deliveries in the city. NIO's global headquarters is located in Shanghai's Jiading district, while its manufacturing plants are in Hefei, Anhui province.
NIO announced the milestone on Monday, handing over a vehicle at the Shanghai leg of the NIO Cup National Golf Invitational to a customer switching from a traditional luxury combustion-engine vehicle.
The company said the ES9 reached the milestone after 5 full months of deliveries and had led sales of vehicles priced above 500,000 yuan ($74,470) in Shanghai for 4 consecutive months.
The ES9 was launched on May 27 this year, with deliveries beginning the following day. Its starting price, including the battery pack, is 498,000 yuan.
The model surpassed 1,000 cumulative deliveries in Shanghai on July 5, making Shanghai the first city in China to reach that level.
Shanghai is a key market for NIO. The company recorded retail sales of 20,736 vehicles in the city in the first half of this year, accounting for 10.88% of its China retail sales over the same period.
The ES9 is touted by NIO as the largest pure electric SUV in China. Its body length reaches 5,365 mm, with a width of 2,029 mm, a height of 1,870 mm, and a wheelbase stretching to 3,250 mm.
The increased size translates directly into interior space: longitudinal cabin space reaches 2805 mm; second-row legroom extends to 1520 mm; third-row headroom is 1002 mm; second-row headroom is 1096 mm—all claimed to be class-leading.
The massive body not only provides a spacious six-seat interior but also directly benchmarks against premium multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) models.
NIO's founder, chairman, and CEO William Li reiterated at today's launch event that the ES9 can make people forget about MPVs.
According to NIO co-founder Qin Lihong, the design philosophy aims for “luxurious but not excessive, prestigious but not ostentatious.” This balance between technology and tradition defines the ES9’s identity as a flagship.
The entire ES9 lineup comes standard with the latest generation of the 900-volt high-voltage architecture. It adopts a dual-motor combination of a 180-kilowatt front motor and a 340-kilowatt rear motor.
The powertrain's combined maximum output reaches 520 kW (697 hp) with a peak torque of 700 Nm, allowing this large SUV to accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.3 seconds.
The ES9 is equipped as standard with a 102-kWh battery pack from CATL. Depending on the configuration and weight, the ES9's CLTC comprehensive pure electric range is 580 kilometers, 600 kilometers, and 620 kilometers, respectively.
