BYD Racco Hits 1,500 Orders in Japan One Month After Launch
BYD’s new electric K-Car is gaining early traction in Japan, with strong demand led by the top-spec 300 Premium trim and deliveries expected to begin from late September. The Racco’s early momentum could help strengthen BYD’s position in Japan’s compact EV market
BYD’s Japan unit says its Racco has racked up about 1.5K orders roughly one month after launch, marking the fastest order ramp for any BYD model in Japan. The top-spec Racco 300 Premium accounts for more than 80% of total orders. Deliveries of the 300 Premium are set to begin arriving in Japan from mid-September. BYD will then allocate vehicles to dealers across the country, with mass deliveries expected to start in late September.
BYD officially launched the Racco in Japan on July 28. It is the company’s first all-electric K-Car developed specifically for the Japanese market. The lineup includes the Racco 200, 300 Plus, and 300 Premium.
Prices start at JPY 2.145M (about USD 13.72K), including tax. The Racco 200 offers a WLTC range of 210 km, while the 300 Plus and 300 Premium both deliver 320 km.
The Racco uses a tall-body design with dual power sliding doors. The layout targets urban commuting and family use. Higher trims add more comfort features and smart functions.
The order mix suggests price is not the Racco’s only draw. A BYD survey of 100 buyers found that the main reasons for choosing the Racco included its perceived quality after test drives, feature levels that exceeded expectations for its price, safety, long-term warranty coverage for the battery and high-voltage components, and driving range.
The Racco’s fast start also reflects the characteristics of Japan’s K-Car market. Small dimensions, low running costs, and strong urban usability have made K-Cars a staple for commuting and family travel in Japan.
More notably, the Racco’s momentum is starting to lift BYD’s broader lineup. BYD Japan says monthly orders for its six models reached 1.26K units in August, the highest level since the automaker entered the Japanese market.

BYD currently sells six models in Japan: Racco, Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7. The lineup spans battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. For BYD, the next test is turning the Racco’s strong order intake into actual deliveries.
