A new regulatory filing published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed information about the battery pack and range of the first model of Nio's sub-brand Firefly: is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 42.1 kWh and has a CLTC range of 420 kilometers
A new regulatory filing published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed information about the battery pack and range of the first model of Nio's sub-brand Firefly, after another filing a month ago revealed some core specs. Firefly's first model, with vehicle model number NAL7000BSEVY1, is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) that supports battery swap. The model is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 42.1 kWh and has a CLTC range of 420 kilometers.
It weighs 1,492 kilograms, of which the power battery pack weighs 314 kilograms. This means that the Firefly model consumes about 10 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers. For reference, the first model of Nio's other sub-brand Onvo, the L60, gets an electricity consumption as low as 12.1 kWh per 100 kilometers under the CLTC standard. The entry-level version of Tesla's facelifted Model Y has an electricity consumption of 10.5 kWh per 100 kilometers.
Nio officially launched the Firefly brand at Nio Day 2024 on December 21 to challenge the BMW Mini as well as Mercedes-Benz's Smart with an eye on the global market. Firefly's first model shares the sub-brand's name and is positioned as a premium boutique small car. The BEV model went on pre-sales in China on December 21 for 148,800 yuan ($20,490) and was set to be launched in April. On January 10, a MIIT regulatory catalog showed the Firefly model with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from Sunwoda. This is the first time Sunwoda has been among Nio's suppliers. The battery maker started out making cell phone batteries and was listed on China's A-share market in 2011.
The Firefly model is a five-seater EV car with length, width and height of 4,003 mm, 1,781 mm and 1,557 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,615 mm, according to last month's filing. It's powered by a single motor from Nio's motor division XPT, with a peak power of 105 kW. The model supports a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour.
