2025 Guangzhou Auto Show: what’s new

The 23rd Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, or Auto Guangzhou 2025, run from November 21 to 30 featuring 93 new models making their debut, surpassing the 78 unveiled in 2024. November 21 is media day, open only to press and invited guests. The general public can visit from November 22 to 30.

The total number of exhibited vehicles will be 1,085, including 629 new energy vehicle (NEV) models, or 58 percent. Major international automotive brands including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Kia will participate in the event. Chinese domestic automakers including Nio, Xpeng, Xiaomi EV, and Li Auto, along with Chinese companies such as CATL and Huawei, will also participate.

The Guangzhou auto show, launched in 2003, is held annually in November, unlike the biennial Shanghai and Beijing auto shows. The Onvo L90 Black Knight Edition is finished in black body color. Moreover, rims and all the trim around the car’s body were also blacked. Interestingly, the interior of this SUV suddenly appeared to be brown. So, the L90 Black Knight lives up to its name only from the outside. The cabin adopts six seats with a 2+2+2 layout.

This special edition comes standard with a dual-motor 4WD, a zero-gravity right second-row captain chair, power side steps, 21-inch rims, and blacked badges. The car comes standard with an 85 kWh battery for 570 km of range. The combined peak power of the dual-motor variant reaches 440 kW (590 hp). The recommended retail price of the Onvo L90 Black Knight Edition is 306,800 yuan ($43,160). Moreover, Chinese customers can reduce the price of the L90 Black Knight Edition due to the BaaS (Battery as a Service) plan option. The car can be purchased without a battery. In this scenario, the L90 owner will need to pay a monthly fee of 899 yuan ($130). As a result, the L90 Black Knight Edition’s price could be sliced to 220,800 yuan ($31,060).

BAW 212 EXPLORER 01 PICK-UP

Beijing Auto Works (BAW) has unveiled one of the year’s most anticipated newcomers—the 212 Explorer 01 in pickup form. Built on the updated BAW 212 T01 platform, it arrives with its own design language, a reworked exterior, and a different technical package. The result reads as a modern rethink of the legendary military Beijing BJ212 that shaped more than one generation of Chinese drivers.

One of the Explorer 01’s headline changes is a completely original front end. While the overall look recalls the classic BJ212 and even nods to the Toyota Land Cruiser J40, BAW’s engineers created a unique grille that visually wraps around the round lighting units. A large “212” badge anchors the center, and the new chunky bumper features chrome “tusks” with integrated fog lamps. In profile, the pickup channels classic utilitarian icons—especially early generations of the Land Rover Defender. Straight-edged doors, square mirrors with 212 badging, and a high glass line emphasize its rugged character. At the back, a big tailgate proudly wearing “212” draws the eye, while the redesigned rear bumper adds a step and a recess for the license plate.

The pickup’s dimensions are substantial: 5,469 mm long, 1,955 mm wide, and 1,970 mm high, riding on a 3,488 mm wheelbase. Curb weight is 2,500 kg. Unlike the base BAW 212 T01, the Explorer 01 adopts a new engine from Dongfeng: a 2.3-liter DDi23-500B turbodiesel rated at 190 hp and developed with Delphi Technologies. It’s the same unit used in the Chery Rely R08. Top speed is 160 km/h, matching the diesel version of the 212 T01—a pragmatic setup that fits the truck’s utilitarian brief.
