Smart #2 EV city car to debut this April at April Beijing auto show

The joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely will unveil the two-seat Smart #2 mini electric vehicle (EV) prototype concept car at the 2026 Beijing auto show in late April. The production version will officially enter Chinese and European markets by the end of 2026

Smart, the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, will debut the two-seat Smart #2 mini electric vehicle (EV) prototype concept car at the 2026 Beijing auto show in late April, following its revealing last September. Smart announced the plan over the weekend, with the production version of the Smart #2 slated for launch within 2026. The 19th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2026) will take place in Beijing from April 24 to May 3, 2026.

The Smart #2 was first teased in China in early September as the fourth model in the brand’s EV line. It’s worth noting that Smart is currently a 50:50 joint venture between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, established in 2019. It is headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Its current model line comprises the Smart #1, the Smart #3, and the Smart #5. Smart announced in September 2025 that it would launch the two-seat Smart #2 in 2026 as the successor to its ForTwo model. The all-new Smart #2 will be launched in China, Europe, and other overseas markets, with a planned roll out in late 2026, Smart previously said.

Designed by the Mercedes-Benz team and built on Smart's new ultra-compact vehicle architecture, the Smart #2 is currently in its final design and development phase. Smart officials disclosed that the #2 pre-production prototype will make a public debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show in late April. Previously, Smart global CEO Tong Xiangbei shared that making a microcar is more complex than developing a large car. At the same time, the president of Smart Europe, Dirk Adelmann, revealed that the company will ensure the model’s profitability.

Launched in 1998, the Smart brand targets the premium compact car segment, representing Mercedes-Benz's solution for urban mobility in megacities. On January 8, 2020, Mercedes-Benz and Geely established a new joint venture under the Smart brand, headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang, to accelerate electrification. The first-generation Smart ForTwo two-seater city car debuted in 1998 and has sold over 2 million units cumulatively. In December 2025, Smart representatives shared that the #2 will begin mass production “in months.”

Based on previous spy shots, the Smart #2 retains the design language of the petrol-powered Smart ForTwo model. It has short overhangs, oval-shaped headlamps, and relatively large wheels. According to previous information, the Smart #2 will adopt a single electric motor in the rear axle and a 30 kWh battery. Its length is around 2.7 meters. The wheelbase reaches 1.9 meters. The Smart #2 aims to boost the brand’s sales in China. Additionally, Smart announced Saturday a special edition Smart #3 collaboration with American artist Keith Haring, priced at 184,900 yuan ($26,580) with only 99 units available in China. The standard Smart #3 starts at 164,900 yuan ($23,650) in China.
