SAIC MG teases a new EV sedan with coupé styling

From the teaser image released today, this new all-electric sedan continues MG’s signature sporty genes, featuring a dynamic fastback coupé design. It is widely speculated that this model is likely the all-electric version of the MG7

The SAIC-owned passenger car brand MG, with British origins, released a teaser image for a brand-new all-electric sedan today. From the teaser image, this new all-electric sedan continues MG’s signature sporty genes, featuring a dynamic fastback coupe design. The lidar unit mounted on the roof is a core highlight of the new car, hinting that it will be equipped with a high-level intelligent driving assistance system.

On the body sides, it features semi-hidden door handles, and the fenders are marked with the “07” badge. It is widely speculated that this model is likely the all-electric version of the MG7.

MG7

For reference, the 2026 model year fuel-powered MG7 was launched on the 6th of this month. Positioned as a mid-size coupe, it offers four variants with a price range of 137,900 yuan ($19,830) to 178,900 yuan ($25,730).

If it aligns with market predictions, the new car is expected to retain the coupé styling while achieving upgrades in performance and intelligence through an electrified platform. It would directly fill the gap in MG’s product lineup for a pure electric coupé in the 150,000 yuan ($21,570) to 200,000 yuan ($28,760) price segment.

Furthermore, the highlights of this model will also be seen as an offensive by the MG brand into the premium new energy market, following its sales climb in 2025. In the past year of 2025, MG’s annual domestic sales reached 137,000 units, a surge of 59% year-on-year. Compared to 86,000 units in 2024, this represents explosive growth, with sales of new energy vehicles soaring by 476%.

The overseas market is an even stronger area for MG. MG’s overseas retail sales reached 591,000 units in 2025, with Europe and the UK combined exceeding 300,000 units. This marks the 11th consecutive year MG has been the top-selling Chinese automotive brand in Europe. In the first half of the year, it even surpassed Tesla for the first time with 153,000 units sold, becoming the most popular Chinese car brand in Europe.

This teased all-electric coupe is merely the prelude to MG’s future product offensive. According to the plan, starting from 2026, MG will launch 13 new energy models over three years, covering the sedan and SUV segments within the 80,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan ($43,140) price range. MG plans to invest 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) into the development process of new energy vehicles, introducing a wide variety of battery electric cars, range extenders, and plug-in hybrids to the market.

MG is a well-known ex-British automaker acquired by the Chinese state-owned company SAIC in 2005. MG general manager Chen Cui highlighted that the brand’s entry into the NEV segment isn’t driven by low prices. The company will actively use the technologies and supply chains of its parent company, SAIC.

We will remind you that SAIC is deeply involved in joint EV projects with Audi (via AUDI brand) and Huawei (via Shangjie brand). The upcoming 13 new energy vehicles include BEVs, EREVs, and PHEVs. MG officials shared that they will actively promote vehicle connectivity solutions with Oppo and semi-solid state battery tech. The brand’s major ambition is to become a globally leading Chinese new energy brand.
