Nio receives European certification for steer-by-wire tech on EV sedan ET9

The steer-by-wire (SBW) technology on Nio's ET9 has received certification in Europe, after deliveries of the executive sedan began in China. The ET9's SBW system has received the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) E-Mark certification, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker announced on May,13. The certification was done by a third-party automotive technical service organization, Applus IDIADA of Spain, and this represents the first time IDIADA has certified a vehicle equipped with steer-by-wire technology in Europe.
As the first vehicle in the Chinese market to feature steer-by-wire technology, the Nio ET9’s system reliability has now received dual validation from regulatory bodies in China and Europe, potentially accelerating the mass production of steer-by-wire systems across the automotive industry.

In December 2024, the ET9's SBW technology was approved for mass production by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, making it the first mass-produced model in China to be equipped with the technology. Deliveries of the four-seat executive sedan began on March 29.
This is currently the only SBW technology in the world to be certified in both China and Europe, William Li, Nio's founder, chairman and CEO, said.
The ET9 is equipped with a number of the latest technologies, one of which is SBW technology, which allows for the complete decoupling of the steering wheel and the wheels.
With the help of SBW technology, there is no mechanical connection between the vehicle's steering wheel and wheels; instead, the steering is controlled by electrical signals.
The angle and torque resistance of the steering wheel can be freely designed, which brings the advantages of lower delays, more precise control, more efficient transmission and more flexible arrangement.
From a practical standpoint, the ET9’s steering wheel rotates 240° from the centre position to either side, meaning drivers need only 0.66 turns to achieve full steering. This eliminates the need to cross hands when making U-turns, enhancing comfort and control. In automated parking scenarios, the steering wheel and turning wheels are completely decoupled. The steering wheel must rotate just 10° to indicate the vehicle’s travel direction without the need for rapid, large-angle rotations.
The ET9 is a four-seater with very large dimensions of 5,325 mm in length, 2,017 mm in width and 1,621 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 3,250 mm. The ET9 is built on a 925 V ultra-high voltage platform, resulting in better energy performance and faster charging speeds. It carries a battery pack with a capacity of 100 kWh and a CLTC range of up to 650 kilometers.
The model uses dual electric motors with a peak power of 180 kW at the front and 340 kW at the rear. The powertrain has a maximum total power of 520 kW and a peak torque of 700 Nm, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The ET9 offers a frunk with a capacity of 105 L, the first Nio-branded model to do so.
