The third-generation Nio ES8 has quickly become one of the most effective loyalty stories in China’s electric-vehicle market, with new survey data suggesting that owners are not only satisfied with the flagship SUV but are actively converting that satisfaction into recommendations and repeat demand.
Survey points to an unusually strong ownership experience
The all-new ES8 scored 83.9 for post-delivery product satisfaction, comfortably ahead of the 70.8 industry average, according to a Tuesday survey by Chinese automotive market research firm Land Roads.
The largest gaps came in areas central to daily EV use: energy replenishment, lighting and the smart cockpit, where the ES8 outperformed the industry average by 37.7, 34.1 and 32.6 points respectively.
That satisfaction is translating into brand momentum. NIO posted a Net Promoter Score of 81.9 in the first half of 2026, ranking first among China’s new energy vehicle brands, while the ES8 itself reached 85.3, the highest score among all-electric models in the market.
More importantly for sales, Land Roads said NIO led the industry in recommendation fulfillment rate at 74.2%, with ES8 owners slightly higher at 75.2%, indicating that advocacy is moving beyond stated intent and into actual word-of-mouth behavior.
Affluent Families Are Choosing the ES8 Quickly
The typical ES8 customer is an affluent family buyer in their 30s. Owners average 36.8 years old, and those aged 30 to 40 account for 60.9% of the sample.
Family use is central to the model’s appeal: 90.2% of owners are married, 55.2% have one child and 21.7% have two or more, while many households include preschool, primary-school or secondary-school children.
The customer base also sits well above the broader market in spending power, with average household income of 686,000 yuan, or about $101,010, and average annual household spending of 287,000 yuan.
Professionally, ES8 buyers are concentrated in sectors such as information technology, manufacturing, finance and retail, often holding roles as business owners, partners or managers.
The purchase journey is notably brief. Owners compared just one other model on average, and 57.3% ordered the ES8 immediately after experiencing it, suggesting a high level of purchase confidence rather than a prolonged cross-shopping process.
When buyers did compare alternatives, they mainly looked at flagship large SUVs from Aito, Zeekr and Li Auto, although no single rival exceeded a 10% cross-shopping rate, pointing to the ES8’s relatively distinct position in the segment.
Space, cabin quality and brand pull shape the deal
Travel ranked as owners’ top spending priority, followed by children’s education, dining and cars. Within the vehicle itself, cabin space was the strongest draw at 44.8%, while the interior and brand image were the leading final purchase reasons at 32.2% and 30.8% respectively.
The ES8 is primarily attracting upgrade-oriented customers rather than first-time buyers, with trade-ins accounting for 50.3% of purchases and additional purchases for 39.9%.
Among trade-in buyers, 41.7% came from luxury brands, 36.1% from other startup brands and 16.7% from within Nio’s own customer base.
These owners replaced their previous vehicles after an average of 58.5 months, well below the industry’s roughly eight-year replacement cycle, underscoring a buyer group motivated by perceived upgrade value rather than necessity.
A broades shift in China’s large SUV market
The ES8’s performance arrives as China’s large SUV market moves more decisively toward full electrification. From January to August 2025, plug-in hybrid and extended-range models together held more than 80% of the segment, while all-electric models accounted for less than 10%.
By the first half of 2026, the all-electric share had climbed to 42%, with the ES8 alone accounting for 24%, according to Land Roads.
The third-generation ES8 launched on September 20, 2025, initially in three-row form, with prices starting at 406,800 yuan including the battery pack.
NIO added a five-seat version on July 9, 2026, priced from 382,800 yuan with the battery included, but Land Roads conducted the survey before that model went on sale, meaning the sample covers only six- and seven-seat owners.
