MG4 Anxin Edition, first mass-produced EV with semi-solid state battery, starts delivery
On December 18, SAIC’s MG brand announced that its all-new electric model MG4 Anxin Edition hatchback – the world’s first mass-produced passenger vehicle equipped with a liquid-solid state battery – has officially begun deliveries in China, starting at 102,800 yuan ($14,392), with a limited-time subsidized price of 99,800 yuan ($13,972)
On the evening of December 18, SAIC MG announced the start of deliveries for the all-new MG4 semi-solid-state Anxin Edition hatchback, described as the world’s first and currently the only mass-produced production vehicle equipped with a semi-solid-state battery. The model is also the first production car to introduce a semi-solid-state battery, an integrated thermal management system, CTB (cell-to-body) battery integration technology, and intelligent driver assistance features into the 100,000 yuan ($14,000) mainstream family car segment.
Power comes from a front permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 120 kW (161 hp/163 Cv) and a peak torque of 250 Nm, paired with 53.95 kWh manganese-based lithium-ion liquid-solid state battery jointly developed by SAIC and QingTao Energy that has 5% less liquid electrolyte content than conventional lithium battery.
Its CLTC range is 530 km, power consumption is 11.9 kWh per 100 km, and takes 21 minutes to recharge the battery from 30% to 80% under 2C fast charging. Additionally, its top speed is 160 km/h and 0 to 50 km/h acceleration time is 3 seconds.
The all-new MG4 measures 4395/1842/1551 mm (l/w/h), with a wheelbase of 2750 mm. Its curb weight is 1,500 kg and the body torsional rigidity is 31000 Nm/deg. For comparison, the other four trims with the conventional lithium iron phosphate battery packs have curb weights of 1,415 kg and 1,485 kg. The standard trunk volume is 471L, and can be expanded to 1,362L after folding down the rear seats.
On the safety front, the semi-solid-state battery system has passed multiple extreme-condition tests conducted by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, with testing standards exceeding national and industry benchmarks by more than 20%.
Across six major test scenarios—including rebar penetration, three-directional extreme cell compression, high-salinity corrosive liquid exposure, extreme cold freezing, underbody ball impact, and high-temperature fire exposure—the MG4 semi-solid-state battery system successfully met all requirements.
Semi-solid-state batteries combine solid and liquid electrolyte components, with solid materials typically accounting for more than 90 per cent of the total electrolyte structure. This configuration enables higher energy density and improved thermal stability compared to conventional liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion cells, while remaining compatible with existing production lines.
As China moves toward standardising technical nomenclature in this field, regulators are preparing to rename semi-solid-state batteries as “solid-liquid batteries” to distinguish them from fully solid-state systems currently under development. The all-new MG4 was officially launched at the Chengdu Motor Show in August this year, available in five trims, starting from 68,800 yuan ($9,800). The Anxin Edition is the most expensive, coming in at 102,800 yuan ($14,392), with a limited-time subsidized price of 99,800 yuan ($13,972).
Inside, the model uses the updated MG4 interior design. The central screen grows from 12.3 inches to 15.6 inches, mechanical buttons beneath the display are removed, and the rotary shift controller is replaced with a column-mounted selector. A 50-watt wireless charging pad is added to the lower console. The car also features the MG–Oppo intelligent cockpit system, powered by a Snapdragon 8155 chip.
Sales data show that MG4 retail sales reached 11,790 units in September, followed by 11,480 units in October and deliveries of 13,574 units in November, maintaining monthly volumes above 10,000 units for several consecutive months.
