Xpeng will debut its new EV sedan P7 in China on August 6

Xpeng will launch its next-generation P7 in Beijing next week. The electric powertrain will be available in single and dual-motor configurations. The refreshed P7 is set to compete with other premium electric sedans in the Chinese market, such as the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model 3

Xpeng will debut its next-generation P7 electric sedan in a week's time, updating one of its most important models. The all-new Xpeng P7 will make its China debut in Beijing on August 6, the EV maker announced. Xpeng has not yet announced the start time for the new P7's debut event, though it typically takes place in the evening Beijing time. XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng stated that the new P7 is positioned as a stylish luxury sedan, a “dream car for the future” created by a collaborative design team from China and abroad.

The company began teasing the new P7 coupé sedan, internally codenamed E29, in May, saying at that time the model would launch in the third quarter, targeting a price point of 300,000 yuan ($41,820). The new P7 is also model targeting the global market, with Xpeng stating on May 15 that it would determine market availability based on the needs of different countries and regions.

The model entered China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regulatory catalog at the end of May, revealing that the five-seat electric sedan measures 5,017 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,427 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,008 mm. These dimensions are similar to those of Xpeng's other sedan, the P7+, which measures 5,056 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,512 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm.

The new car can also be equipped with an active rear spoiler, optional carbon fibre elements, and scissor doors. This model rides on 20-inch wheels as standard with 245/45 tires in the front and 265/40 in the rear axle. There is also an option with 245/40 R21 & 275/35 R21 wheels. The new P7 is based on the same E platform as the G9 SUV. Xpeng currently sells the Mona M03, P7+, and P7i sedans, with the Mona M03 and P7+ being the main models. The P7+ focuses on family use and offers more space, while the new P7 is more comprehensive and personalized in terms of intelligence and performance, Xpeng said previously.

On May 23, the new model applied for a sales license in China, revealing core specs. The electric powertrain will be available in single and dual-motor configurations, with the single-motor version delivering 270 kW (367 Cv) of maximum power. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant combines a 167 kW (227 Cv) front motor with a 270 kW (367 Cv) rear motor. The system’s total power output is 437 kW (594 Cv). The car has a curb weight of 2,188 – 2,220 kg, depending on the configuration. The top speed is 230 km/h. Its another highlight is large Brembo brake calipers. Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings reveal the new P7 will offer battery options of 74.9 kWh and 92.2 kWh, delivering CLTC ranges of 625 km and 820 km, respectively.

The new P7 will be equipped with XPeng’s “Turing AI chip”, powering a vision-based driver assistance system that supports NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) functionality for both highway and urban environments. The first-generation P7 made its debut at the Shanghai auto show in April 2019 and was officially launched in April 2020. As Xpeng's first sedan, the P7's stylish exterior design has earned it a good reception since its launch. Both the first-generation P7 and the new P7 were designed by Xpeng's head of creative design, Rafik Ferrag, the French designer who joined Xpeng in 2018 and before he worked as a designer at Citroen and Honda. "The original P7 was a milestone for Xpeng and a turning point in China’s EV landscape," Ferrag said. "With this new generation, we set out to design a pure electric sports sedan that could amaze at every angle," he added.

The exterior design of the new P7 is considered bold, as the hard lines at the rear are quite different from mainstream sedans currently available in China. The refreshed P7 is set to compete with other premium electric sedans in the Chinese market, such as the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model 3

Inside, the cabin adopts Xpeng’s latest interior design language, featuring a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a large floating centre display. Dual wireless phone charging pads for front passengers and integrated sports seats. The gear selector has also shifted to a steering column-mounted design.
