Denza, the premium new energy vehicle (NEV) brand of BYD, unveiled its first concept sports car, the Denza Z, yesterday on the first day of the Shanghai auto show, showcasing new technologies. Denza Z adopts the Pure Emotion design concept, realizing the fusion of aerodynamics and functional design so as to serve performance and be built for the track, BYD’s Global Design Director Wolfgang Egger said. Denza Z is a four-seater coupé full electric which is expected to compete with the Porsche 911. It has a bold front lip and sharp headlights, giving it an energetic look. The overall design feels sleek and dynamic, and both hardtop and convertible versions will be offered.

Unlike traditional ICE sports cars, the Denza Z features a steer-by-wire system powered by advanced AI algorithms, according to its marketing speak. This system delivers a smoother, more refined handling experience on regular roads, while still ensuring precise and responsive steering on the track. Additionally, the Denza Z is equipped with a foldable steering wheel, which is said to increase safety by creating extra space during collisions and adding a futuristic touch to the driving experience, according to Denza during the event.
In addition, the Denza Z will be equipped with the Disus-M system—an upgraded version of the current Disus-Z. Disus-M is an intelligent magnetorheological body control system capable of making real-time adjustments based on road conditions, with suspension responses occurring in under 10 milliseconds. According to Denza, this technology provides enhanced stability and support during high-speed cornering on tracks. The Disus M system will also be available on other upcoming Denza and BYD models.
The Denza Z will also be the first sports car to feature BYD's e3 technology, according to Denza. The e3 technology can be seen as a scaled-down version of BYD's e4 technology built for ultra-luxury cars, bringing tri-motor independent drive with dual-motor independent steering at the rear wheels. The Z9, Z9GT and N9, which are already on sale, are equipped with e3 technology.
