BYD unveiled its new electrification platform with 1,000-kW supercharging support

The Chinese new energy vehicle maker released the “Super e-Platform” with a 1000V high-voltage system and charging power of up to 1,000 kW, all the highest in the world. The Han L EV and Tang L EV are the first models based on BYD's Super e-Platform

On March 17, BYD released the 10C megawatt charging stations suitable for passenger electric cars with the 1000V high-voltage system. They can charge 400 km of range in 5 minutes. BYD was often criticized for its slow DC charging function. Despite being safe, BYD’s Blade LFP batteries took longer to charge than ternary NMC packs from other manufacturers. The world’s biggest NEV maker decided to change it. As a result, the company prepared to launch its first vehicles based on the Super e-Platform with a 1000V high-voltage system. 

To match these BEVs, BYD officially released the 1000 kW charger, which is also a part of the Super e-Platform. It is called a “Megawatt Flash Charger.” It has a peak charging power of 1000 kW or 1 MW. Thanks to this number, the BYD’s pile supports the 10C charging. It can charge 400 km in 5 minutes. It is two km in just one second. Han L EV and Tang L EV are new flagship models under the BYD brand and the first models based on BYD's Super e-Platform, with the core consisting of blade batteries that support ultra-fast charging, high-performance electric motors, and a new generation of silicon carbide power chips. Han L EV and Tang L EV are both available for pre-sales in China from yesterday, with a price tag of 270,000 yuan ($37,300). Official launch is set for early April. 

BYD calls the batteries used in the platform flash-charge batteries, saying it has a 10 C charging multiplier, the highest of any mass-produced power battery in the world. C is the charging multiplier of the battery, and 10 C theoretically means the battery can be fully charged in one-tenth of an hour -- six minutes. BYD said it redesigned the blade batteries to allow faster ion transfer in the electrolyte and less resistance through the diaphragm, resulting in faster charging. 

The batteries support charging voltages of up to 1,000 V and charging currents of up to 1,000 A, allowing charging power of up to 1,000 kW (kilowatt), all the highest in the world, according to the company. 1,000 kW is 1 MW (megawatt), which BYD said is the first time the industry has used MW as a unit of measurement for charging power, signifying that charging power has entered the MW era. 

Yesterday, During the live test, the 10C megawatt charging stations suitable for passenger electric cars with the 1000V high-voltage system reached the 1 MW level of power in 10 seconds (while charging Han L EV and Tang L EV). The car’s charging time from 7% to 50% was just 4.5 minutes. The BYD Megawatt Flash Charger is the most powerful passenger car pile in the industry. Its core rivals also show impressive performance. However, they still lag behind:

Tesla V4: 500 kW.

Li Auto 5C: 520 kW.

NIO Power: 640 kW.

Xpeng S5: 800 kW 


The BYD Han L EV is a sleek sedan that retains the brand’s distinguishing design language. Dimensions of the Han L EV are 5050/1960/1505 mm with a wheelbase of 2970 mm. The Han L EV adopts the 1000V high-voltage platform and an 83.2 kWh LFP battery pack (the range is 601 – 701 km CLTC). This battery pack supports 10C charging via the BYD megawatt pile. It can add 400 km of range in 5 minutes. So, this charging technology is actually comparable to refueling a petrol-powered car. 

The entry-level Han L EV has a single electric motor with a peak power output of 500 kW (670 hp). The 4WD variant of this sedan boasts a dual-motor 4WD (580 kW + 230 kW) with a peak power output of 810 kW (1,086 hp). The Han L EV speeds up to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. And the 100 to 200 km/h acceleration time is 4.74 seconds. Moreover, its top speed reaches 305 km/h. The 4WD Han L EV’s rear e-motor can reach a speed of 30,511 rpm. On 30,000 rpm, this electric motor still has 524 kW of power. The BYD Han L EV is available for preorders with a price range of 270,000 – 350,000 yuan ($37,300 – $48,350).

The BYD Tang L EV is a large SUV with a 2+3+2 seat layout. This crossover boasts hefty dimensions of 5040/1996/1760 mm with a wheelbase of 2950 mm. The Tang L EV shares the powertrain with the Han L EV sedan. So, its standard variant offers 500 kW (670 hp) and the 4WD version boasts 810 kW (1,086 hp). However, the Tang L EV boasts a larger 100.5 kWh LFP battery pack. This SUV has three range variants for 560 km, 600 km, and 670 km under CLTC conditions. The BYD Tang L EV speeds up to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. Its acceleration from 100 km/h to 200 km/h is 6.19 seconds. The top speed is 287.4 km/h. The BYD Tang L EV started presales in China with a price range of 280,000 – 360,000 yuan ($38,690 – $39,740). 

In addition to the Han L EV and Tang L EV, BYD has also started accepting customer reservations for the hybrid Han L DM and Tang L DM, but no pricing information has been released. The Han L DM and Tang L DM will be equipped with the most powerful variant of BYD's DM hybrid technology -- DM-p, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.9 seconds and 4.3 seconds, respectively. BYD will officially launch these models at another new launch event in early April.
