Xpeng GX officially launched in China

Chinese EV maker has officially launched in China its new flagship SUV with retail price range between 279,800 yuan ($41,120) and 359,800 yuan ($52,900). This pricing is highly aggressive and significantly lower than the pre-sales price (399,800 yuan - $58,790) announced a month ago. It is available with BEV and EREV powertrain options

Xpeng has officially launched its new flagship model, the GX, a new vehicle aimed at gaining an edge in China's increasingly competitive large SUV market. The Xpeng GX is the brand’s first three-row SUV. In terms of body dimensions, the new flagship model Xpeng GX demonstrates the massive size of a full-size SUV, measuring 5,265 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,115 mm.

Despite a high bonnet line, this large family driver boasts a drag coefficient of 0.255 Cd. Despite the upcoming domestic regulations, the GX adopts retractable door handles that align with the overall minimalistic styling. The car rides on 21 or 22-inch wheels.

To alleviate consumers' range anxiety, the Xpeng GX continues the company's dual-powertrain strategy, offering both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) versions.

The EREV version is equipped with a 1.5T engine as a range extender, sending power to the battery and electric motors. This modification has two e-motors with a combined peak power output of 370 kW (496 hp-504 Cv) and features a 63.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.

This allows the GX EREV to offer a pure electric range of 430 kilometers, while the combined range with a full tank (60-liter) and full charge reaches up to 1,585 kilometers.

For consumers who prefer pure electric drive, the BEV version of the GX is built on an 800-volt high-voltage silicon carbide platform and supports 5C supercharging technology.

The BEV version is available in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive variants. The two-wheel-drive model is equipped with a 91.9-kWh LFP battery pack, providing a range of 665 kilometers, and features a 270 kW rear-drive motor.

The top-trim pure electric four-wheel-drive Ultra Flagship edition offers a peak power of up to 430 kW (577 hp-585 Cv), is upgraded to a 110-kWh ternary lithium battery pack, offering a maximum CLTC range of up to 750 kilometers. This flagship version can replenish 525 kilometers of range in just 12 minutes under DC fast charging.

The GX model adopts a flexible computing power allocation strategy. The entry-level Max version is equipped with one Turing AI chip, providing 750 TOPS of computing power for smart driving.

The mid-range Ultra SE version features two Turing chips, achieving 1,500 TOPS of computing power to support more complex autonomous driving scenarios.

The high-end Ultra and Ultra Flagship versions are equipped with three Turing chips, boasting 2,250 TOPS of smart driving computing power. This high-computing-power hardware, combined with the second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) large model, enables the GX to utilize a LiDAR-free, pure-vision solution to achieve full-scenario intelligent assisted driving.

In terms of chassis control, the GX is equipped with steer-by-wire and active rear-wheel steering technologies. Other highlights are dual-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering with a steering angle of 7.5 degrees (up to 10 degrees in self-parking mode). As a result, this 5.2-meter SUV has a turning radius of 5.4 meters.

Inside the cabin, the new vehicle adopts a 2+2+2 six-seat layout. The center console of the Xpeng GX adopts a 17.3-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel, and an 88-inch augmented reality head-up display. The interior offers three shades: brown, white, and purple. The center tunnel adopts two wireless charging pads. There is also a fragrance system and ambient lighting.

The car’s trunk has a capacity of 673 liters as standard. Its capacity reaches 1,748 liters with the third-row seats folded. The second-row captain chairs boast zero-gravity modes, power legrests, ventilation, heating, and 16-point massage functions. The Xpeng GX adopts 33 speakers, a built-in refrigerator, and a ceiling-mounted 21.4-inch screen.

The official suggested retail price range for this six-seat model is set between 279,800 yuan ($41,120) and 359,800 yuan ($52,900). To further stimulate early market demand, Xpeng is also offering limited-time vehicle purchase entitlements, bringing the actual starting price down to 269,800 yuan ($39,670).

This pricing is highly aggressive and significantly lower than the pre-sales price announced a month ago. The pre-sales price of the GX was 399,800 yuan ($58,790), which was comparable to the 406,800 yuan ($59,810) of the flagship SUV ES8 from Nio main brand.

However, the actual pricing of the flagship model ultimately aligns with the L90, the flagship three-row SUV from Nio's mass-market sub-brand Onvo, which starts at 265,800 yuan ($39,100).

This aggressive pricing strategy highlights Xpeng's ambition to capture a larger share of the mid-to-high-end family user market.

The new GX garnered 24,863 firm orders within the first 12 hours of its launch, according to figures it shared Thursday. The top-tier Ultra Flagship trims accounted for more than 80% of the initial orders for the GX, Xpeng's chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said.
