Smart #6: the brand’s biggest new model is.a sedan PHEV

Smart’s biggest model to date, the Smart #6 EHD plug-in hybrid sedan, was revealed by the Chinese MIIT. The new car deviates from the brand’s traditional design, and looks more mainstream. The official market entry is expected to be next year as the brand’s second plug-in hybrid model after the Smart #5 EHD; 

The Smart brand is preparing a new mid-size sedan known #6. The vehicle represents a shift in Smart’s product approach in China, as its current models, including the Smart #3 and Smart #5, are positioned in compact SUV and crossover segments. The #6 is being developed as a sedan equipped with a plug-in hybrid system rather than a purely electric layout. 

The new car, the Smart #6 EHD plug-in hybrid sedan, was revealed by the Chinese MIIT and deviates from the brand’s traditional design, and looks more mainstream. The official market entry is expected to be next year as the brand’s second plug-in hybrid model after the Smart #5 EHD. 

As Smart’s biggest model to date once launched, the Smart #6 EHD measures 4906/1922/1508 mm, with a wheelbase of 2926 mm, which is also the longest wheelbase across Smart’s entire vehicle lineup. 

The EHD plug-in hybrid system onboard the vehicle is built based on Geely’s NordThor Hybrid 2.0 technology, boasting a system power output of 320 kW (429 hp/435 Cv). The powertrain consists of a 120 kW (161 hp/163 Cv) 1.5T engine and electric motor, mated to a 3-speed DHT. The lithium iron phosphate battery is supplied by either SVOLT or CATL (capacity has not been revealed yet). 

The official CLTC pure electric range is 285 km, the comprehensive range is 1,810 km, and the fuel consumption is as low as 3.9L/100km. Referring to the previously launched Smart #5 EHD, its powertrain outputs a combined power of 320 kW, consisting of a 120 kW 1.5T engine and a 200 kW (268 hp/272 Cv) electric motor, also mated to a 3-speed DHT. 

Two curb weights are also available: 1990 kg and 2099 kg, depending on the trims. The tire specifications are 255/45R19 and 255/40R20. In terms of design, most notably, the yellow exterior paint, yellow brake calipers, sloping roofline, and the electrically adjustable rear wing further emphasize the sporty nature of the vehicle.
