Tesla today launched a new five-seat Model Y variant in China, boasting the longest range in the SUV's lineup, following a similar move for the Model 3 sedan three months ago. The Model Y variant -- the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive Edition -- starts at 288,500 yuan ($40,500), boasts an 821-kilometer CLTC range, making it the longest-range Model Y available.

The introduction of the Long Range RWD Model Y brings the full Model Y series in China to four options

Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) from 263,500 yuan ($36,900),

Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) from 288,500 yuan ($40,500),

Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) from 313,500 yuan ($43,900),

Model Y L (Six-seater version) from 339,000 yuan ($47,500).

The new variant costs an additional 25,000 yuan ($3,500), or 9.49 percent, compared to the entry-level model with a CLTC range of 593 kilometers, priced at 263,500 yuan. Under the hood, the Long Range RWD Model Y is equipped with a 78.4 kWh LG ternary lithium battery pack, enabling its 821 km CLTC range.

Power comes from a single rear-wheel-drive motor with a peak output of 225 kW (302 hp), allowing for a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h. The 821-km Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm -- identical to the current five-seat Model Y on sale.

An exterior feature is the adoption of Tesla’s patented diffuse reflection technology at the rear, which is expected to become a key identifier for the new model.

Inside, the new Model Y continues with the family-style interior, featuring a standard 15.4-inch front touchscreen and an 8-inch rear touchscreen, both supporting Bluetooth connectivity. Passengers can enjoy music, movies, and games from any seat, as well as control seat heating.
