Xpeng will unveil its first extended range model X9 MPV in October
The extended-range X9 will kick off Xpeng's EREV product cycle, followed by extended-range G7 and G6 SUVs, and extended-range P7+ sedan. He Xiaopeng, CEO of the Chinese EV maker, announced the plan today, saying the X9 EREV will be the world's longest-range new energy seven-seater
Xpeng will unveil its extended-range X9 MPV in China in October, formally kicking off its strategy in the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) segment. He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, announced the plan today, saying the X9 EREV will be the world's longest-range new energy seven-seater.
EREV stands for Extended Range Electric Vehicle. It is a type of plug-in hybrid powertrain, where the internal combustion engine (ICE) isn’t connected to the wheels. Instead, it serves as a power generator, sending power to a battery and electric motors. Range extenders vehicles became very popular in China as they are cheaper than their BEV counterparts. Moreover, EREVs help to deal with range anxiety problems.
The X9 EREV will be built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform, supporting 5C charging rate like other Xpeng models. The 7-seat MPV measures 5,316 mm in length, 1,988 mm in width, and 1,785 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm. It is longer than the all-electric Xpeng X9's 5,293 mm length, while other dimensions remain identical.
The MPV is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine from Harbin Dongan Auto Engine serving as the range extender, delivering a maximum power output of 110 kW. It is equipped with a single electric motor delivering 210 kW and it utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by CALB.
The model boasts a 63.3 kWh battery, suitable for a 450-kilometer CLTC battery range and a combined range of up to 1,600 kilometers when fully fueled and charged. The Xpeng X9 EREV has a curb weight of 2,750 kilograms and a maximum speed of 180 kilometers per hour. Mr. He said that Xpeng has invested over 1,000 test vehicles for the X9 EREV in cumulative testing spanning 800 days, covering 20 countries and 330 cities. The X9 has accumulated over 20 million kilometers of testing, enduring extreme conditions including sub-zero temperatures, high heat, and high-altitude environments, he added. "We hope the extended range of the Xpeng X9 Super Extended Range Edition will extend the warmth of home to even greater distances," Mr. He said.
Xpeng's goal is to make the X9 EREV a truly reliable large seven-seat family car, Mr. He said. The X9 was launched in China on January 1, 2024, marking Xpeng's first MPV model. The 2025 X9 MPV currently available in China offers four variants, with starting prices of 359,800 yuan ($50,100), 379,800 yuam, 399,800 yuan, and 419,800 yuan. Xpeng introduced its extended-range system called the Kunpeng Super Electric System in November 2024.
The X9 EREV will be the first in Xpeng's lineup of EREVs. The extended-range G7 SUV will be launched in the first quarter of 2026. Xpeng will launch the extended-range version of G6 S/UV and P7+ electric sedan in 2026. He Xiaopeng stated: The XPeng X9 will offer dual powertrains—one pure electric and the other “Super Electric.” In the future, nearly every XPeng model will come with two powertrain options. In the past, the biggest issue with extended-range models was the lack of electric advantages. However, today’s “Super Electric” offers long range, fast charging, no noise, and addresses all the problems of hybrid systems. This will make it a strong competitor in the next era of hybrid vehicles.
