BYD’s Yangwang U9 with 2,200 kW released in a regulatory filing

Chinese regulator, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has released details of a Yangwang U9 Track Edition electric supercar in its latest vehicle product catalogue

Chinese regulator, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has released details of a Yangwang U9 Track Edition. The model, classified as a pure electric sports car, features four electric motors, one on each wheel, each rated at 555 kW. Combined output reaches 2,220 kW (2,991 Cv), with a top speed listed at 350 km/h. For comparison, the current production U9 delivers 960 kW in total and is priced at 1.68 million yuan (approx. $231,000). 

The U9 Track Edition largely retains the exterior design of the existing model, shown in red paint with a gloss black styling package. Standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels with 325/35 R20 tyres, a carbon-fibre roof, a large fixed carbon-fibre rear wing, and a rear diffuser fitted with adjustable blades for aerodynamic optimisation. Filing documents list optional aerodynamic parts, such as a standard or enhanced carbon-fibre front splitter and an electric rear wing. 

Dimensions are given as 4,966 or 4,991 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, and 1,311 or 1,351 mm in height, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase. Kerb weight is 2,480 kg, and both front and rear tyres are 325/30 R20 (112Y). Total vehicle mass is recorded at 2,630 kg. 

The current model uses an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 450 km. Charging specifications include up to 500 kW DC fast-charging capability, enabling a 30% to 80% state-of-charge in about 10 minutes. Suspension is configured as a double wishbone setup at the front and a multi-link design at the rear, combined with BYD’s DiSus-X intelligent body control system, which allows advanced demonstrations such as three-wheel driving and synchronised body movement. 

The U9 is a flagship product of BYD’s Yangwang brand. In 2024, the car recorded a top speed of 391.94 km/h, setting a Chinese production-car speed record, and achieved a 7:17.900 lap time at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife. In June this year, Yangwang announced plans to further challenge high-speed and lap records at the Nürburgring and Germany’s ATP proving ground. 

The regulator filing indicates that the updated U9 will significantly increase its output compared with the current model. With more than 2,900 Cv, it exceeds the rated power of electric hypercars such as the Lotus Evija (1,972 hp) and Rimac Nevera (1,914 hp). Market launch details have not yet been disclosed. 

The Yangwang U9 electric sports car entered the Chinese market in February 2024. On January 21, Yangwang announced it had delivered the 100th U9 sports car in China. It means the automaker has sold 19 units of this model so far in January 2025. According to Yangwang, the U9 became the first Chinese supercar to reach this sales volume.
