BYD has officially launched the Han L EV and Tang L EV with ultra-fast charging technology

The Chinese new energy vehicle maker rolled out both models at a launch event today in China. The Han L sedan and Tang L SUV are available in pure electric EV and plug-in hybrid PHEV variants. Starting prices are lower than the pre-sales prices announced last month 

BYD has officially launched the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV at a launch event today in China. Both models are available in pure electric with ultra-fast charging technology and plug-in hybrid variants. Built on BYD's 1,000-volt high-voltage electrical platform, the Han EV model supports simultaneous charging with two charge guns up to a maximum charging multiplier of 10C. The Han L EV can get a 400-kilometer range on a five-minute charge, and can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in just six minutes, according to BYD. The model takes 20 minutes to charge from 0 to 100 percent. 

The Tang L EV is also based on BYD's 1,000-volt high-voltage platform and comes standard with a blade battery pack with a capacity of 100.5 kWh and a maximum charging multiplier of 8.4C. The SUV can get a range of 370 kilometers on a five-minute charge. It charges from 10 percent to 70 percent in 6 minutes and from 0 to 100 percent in 29.7 minutes.

The Han L is a mid-to-large-size sedan with a length, width and height of 5,050 mm, 1,960 mm and 1,505 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,970 mm. BYD further claimed that the Han L has the world’s largest front trunk of a car at 160L.


BYD is offering three variants of the Han L EV, with starting prices of 219,800 yuan ($29,910), 239,800 yuan, 279,800 yuan, respectively, significantly lower than the pre-sales price range of 270,000 yuan to 350,000 yuan announced on March 17. Its three variants come standard with BYD's new blade batteries, which all have a capacity of 83.2 kWh, and have a CLTC range of either 701 km or 601 km. 


Both the lower priced variants of the Han L EV are single-motor rear-wheel-drive models with a peak motor power of 500 kW at 30,511 rpm. The motor delivers a peak torque of 420 Nm, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.5 seconds. Its highest priced variant is powered by dual electric motors, with the front motor delivering 230 kW of peak power and 410 Nm of peak torque at 21,500 rpm. The rear motor delivers 580 kW of peak power and 450 Nm of peak torque at 30,511 rpm. The powertrain delivers a peak power of 810 kW and a peak torque of 860 Nm, which allows the vehicle to accelerate in 2.7 seconds from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.7 seconds. 



The plug-in hybrid PHEV Han L DM has the same dimensions as the Han L EV, and is also available in two single-motor versions and one dual-motor version, with starting prices of 209,800 yuan, 229,800 yuan and 259,800 yuan respectively. The Han L DM also became available for pre-order on March 17, but no pricing information was announced at that time. 


The PHEV sedan is based on BYD's new fifth-generation DM-p hybrid technology and has a 1.5T engine. The two lower-priced variants are powered by a front motor with a peak power of 200 kW and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Its highest-priced variant additionally has a rear motor with a peak power of 200 kW that can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. 


The Han L DM comes standard with a battery pack with a capacity of 29.4 kWh and a battery range of 200 km or 180 km. It has a combined range of up to 1,200 kilometers when fully fueled and charged. 


The pure-electric SUV Tang L EV is also offered in three variants with starting prices of 239,800 yuan, 259,800 yuan and 289,800 yuan, which is below the pre-sales price range of 280,000 yuan to 360,000 yuan. 


The mid to large-size SUV measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width and 1,760 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. The two lower-priced variants are rear-wheel-drive models that use the same powertrain as the rear-wheel-drive Han L EV, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. The highest-priced variant has the same powertrain as the Han L EV's highest-priced variant and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. 


The plug-in hybrid PHEV Tang L DM is also available in three variants starting at 229,800 yuan, 249,800 yuan and 285,800 yuan, respectively. It uses the same powertrain as the Han L DM but has a larger capacity battery pack of 35.6 kWh. The Tang L DM's battery range is available in three options -- 215 kilometers, 200 kilometers, and 175 kilometers -- and has a combined range of up to 1,270 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and full charge.

The Chinese automaker’s new kei EV is showing early momentum in one of Japan’s most protected vehicle segments, with demand driven largely by existing mini-car owners and second-car buyers  BYD Racco has gained strong early traction following its launch.
